Garage Organization in Anmore & Belcarra

Anmore and Belcarra are the two small villages above Port Moody where the garage is rarely a single room. On one-acre lots it is often an attached triple, a detached shop and an RV bay. In Belcarra it is the place the boat gear dries out. Both villages share a forest full of bears. We organize these garages around the things that are particular to living here: a locked, secure home for the wildlife-proof carts, a freezer plan for food scraps, septic-safe chemical storage, and dry racks for boats, paddleboards and lake gear.

Two Villages, One Kind of Garage Problem

The Village of Anmore sits north of Port Moody along the slopes above Indian Arm. It was incorporated on December 7, 1987 with a stated goal of staying semi-rural, and it has held to that: 2,356 people in the 2021 census across 27.53 square kilometres, no highways, and two main roads. Sunnyside Road climbs from the western entrance to the Buntzen Lake gate at the north end. East Road comes in from Heritage Mountain. Both end in Port Moody, which is where every errand, depot run and hardware store trip begins.

Lot size sets the tone. Anmore's RS-1 zoning calls for one-acre lots, and in a referendum held with the 2002 municipal election, 70% of voters chose to keep it while 77% voted against half-acre zoning. The homes on those lots are large and spread out, and the village relies on septic systems rather than a sewer connection. That one fact changes how a garage full of paint, solvent and pool chemicals should be handled, which we cover below.

Belcarra is smaller and older. It was incorporated on August 22, 1979, counted 687 people in 289 dwellings in 2021, and is reached by a single winding road or by water. Many residents keep private docks and boats, and homes back from the shore often share a dock. The two villages share the volunteer Sasamat Fire Department, the 182 Community Shuttle, and the same neighbours in the trees: black bears.

So the garage here does jobs a Burnaby townhouse tandem never does. It is the bear-proof pantry for garbage and organics, the boathouse, the workshop, sometimes the RV port, and the staging area for every trip down the hill. Our Coquitlam garage organization page covers the Tri-Cities suburbs below; this page is about the two villages above them.

Triple Garages, Detached Shops and RV Bays

A look through recent Anmore listings shows the pattern. A 1995 home on 1.02 acres came with an attached double garage, a second detached garage for RV parking with a workshop upstairs, another two-car garage with an office, and a storage shed. A 2017 build on 1.1 acres had a triple garage, RV parking with a dumping station and room for an eight-car garage. A 2006 home had a triple with an extra-deep bay sold as ideal for a workshop.

Spread across three buildings, storage drifts. Half the camping gear lives in the shop loft, the other half behind the RV, and the paint lives wherever the last project ended. Our first step on an acreage property is a short walk of every building with you to decide what each one is for. A typical split we land on:

  • Attached garage: cars, the daily landing zone by the house door, the locked cart station, the freezer, and the bins you open weekly.
  • Detached shop: tools, the workbench, lumber, fuel cans and anything that smells of oil or solvent, kept out of the house's air.
  • RV or boat bay: the vehicle plus its own gear, so hoses, chocks, the dump kit and life jackets live beside the thing they serve.
  • Shed: yard tools, the mower and seasonal yard bags only.

The main garage goes back to cars and daily useAn example layout, not a photo of an Anmore home. Once the shop and the RV bay take their own gear, the main garage only has to hold what the household touches every week, and the cars come back inside.

Big garages hide a lot of duplication. When everything from three buildings is on the driveway at once, most families find two or three of the same drill, ladder and cooler. We set aside the spares for donation and haul them away the same day, which is usually what frees a bay. If the whole property needs a heavier cut first, our garage decluttering service runs ahead of the organization build.

Workshops get their own plan. The bench goes under the best light, with the tools you use most hung on the wall at arm's reach and fasteners in labelled drawers rather than coffee tins. Lumber goes horizontal on a wall rack, off the slab. In a deep bay like the 2006 listing's, the bench usually belongs at the far end so a car can still pull in front of it.

A Locked Home for the Carts

Anmore's Solid Waste Management Bylaw No. 554-2016 sets the rhythm. Recycling and organics are collected every Friday from 7 a.m. and garbage every other Friday. Carts may not go to the curb before 5:30 a.m. on collection day, and they must be locked and stored again by 10 p.m. that night. The lids and locks have to work properly to keep wildlife out. The village's own advice is to store carts somewhere secure, such as a garage or shed, and if that is not possible, to keep food scraps in the freezer until collection day. Organics pickup starts in the northern neighbourhoods, Crystal Creek and Countryside, to cut down on wildlife getting into the carts.

In practice, the garage is where the carts end up, and in most garages they are an afterthought jammed beside a car door. We give them a proper station:

  • A marked spot by the overhead door so carts roll straight out at 5:30 a.m. without moving a bike or a cooler first. On a long Anmore driveway, the shortest path to the curb matters.
  • Room for the lid to open fully against the wall, so nobody props it and forgets to relatch.
  • A wash-down zone with a hose bib or bucket, brush and a mild cleaner on a hook above. Clean carts smell less, and the village's Be Bear Aware notice asks residents to clean bins regularly.
  • A floor tray or mat under the organics cart so drips stay off the slab.
  • A key hook beside the station if your carts use keyed locks, so unlocking on collection morning takes seconds.

Each property can order one garbage cart and one organics cart in 120 or 240 litre sizes, and properties with a secondary suite can order two of each. Four carts plus a recycling box, a yellow paper bag and a glass bin need about a metre and a half of wall. We plan for that width from the start.

Everything Else a Bear Can Smell

Carts are only part of it. The Be Bear Aware notice the village publishes lists the rest: keep garbage in the house, garage or shed until pickup; freeze smelly food scraps in a sealed bag or container; store pet food indoors; clean the barbecue after each use and keep it covered in a secure area; use bird feeders only in winter; and pick ripe and fallen fruit daily. It also points out that in B.C. it is an offence to feed dangerous wildlife or leave attractants available to them, and that nearly 1,000 bears are destroyed in the province each year because of conflicts with people.

Grey storage bins with clip-down lids and printed labels on a steel garage shelf, the kind of sealed container used for pet food and bird seed in bear country

Almost every item on that list lands in the garage, so we treat the garage as the one room that can never smell like food. That means:

  • Pet food and bird seed in gasketed bins with clip lids, on a shelf inside the garage, never on the porch or in a paper sack on the floor.
  • A chest freezer with a labelled scraps bin for the days between pickups. Fish guts from a Sasamat or Indian Arm outing go here too.
  • Barbecue parking inside the garage or shop with a cover, cleaned grill down, rather than on the deck all season.
  • Fruit pickers and bags hung together so clearing a tree takes ten minutes, not a search.
  • Empty bottles and cans rinsed and boxed for the Return-It depot on Barnet Highway, so sticky recycling does not sit by the door for weeks.

The garage door itself is the last part of the plan. A door left open on a summer evening undoes everything else, so we keep the area just inside it clear and make sure nothing blocks the photo eye or the door's travel.

Chemicals, Septic and the Depot Run

Anmore homes rely on septic systems, and a septic field does not mix well with paint thinner, solvents and leftover chemicals rinsed down a utility sink. We sort every liquid in the garage during the job: what is current and needed goes into a closed, low cabinet in the shop or the far corner of the garage, away from the house door and the freezer, and what is old, dried, unlabelled or unwanted leaves with us for proper disposal instead of going down a drain.

Most of the rest goes to the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre in Coquitlam, which takes many items that curbside pickup does not, free for many recyclables. Batteries under 5 kg can go to the Anmore Community Hub or the Village Hall. Glass bottles and jars only go in the light blue bin at the curb; broken glass and mirrors do not. Knowing where each pile goes is half the work, and on a property with three buildings of accumulated stuff, we usually make the depot run on the same day.

Fuel needs its own rule. Gas cans for the mower, generator and boat sit on the shop floor, away from the furnace or water heater, never on a high shelf. If you also want the garage set up for a strong shake, our earthquake-ready garage storage guide covers anchoring shelving to studs and keeping heavy items low.

Belcarra: Boats, Docks and Lake Gear

In Belcarra, the dock is part of the house, and the garage is where everything from it goes in the off-season. Life jackets, paddles, fenders, lines, a dinghy outboard, crab traps, fishing rods and wet suits all come up the hill wet. In Anmore, the same pattern shows up with kayaks and paddleboards for Buntzen Lake, which BC Hydro runs as a recreation area with a beach at each end and trails all the way around.

Water gear needs airflow more than it needs space. We hang life jackets and wet suits on open hooks, never in a closed bin, so they dry between trips. Paddleboards and kayaks go on padded wall cradles or a ceiling hoist above the hood of a parked car, with a measured check that the overhead door clears them when it opens. Crab traps and anything that smells of bait get a hook outside the house door's path and a rinse station nearby, because bait is an attractant too. Outboards sit on a proper stand on the floor, not on a shelf.

Bikes and winter gear share the same wall. Mountain bikes for the Buntzen trails, skis and boards for the North Shore hills: our garage bike storage guide covers wall rails, e-bike charging and theft hardening in detail, and the North Vancouver organization page, across the water from Belcarra, covers full gear walls.

Shade, Rain and a Forest at the Door

Lots that sit under tall conifers on a north-facing slope stay shaded and wet for most of the rainy season. Detached shops and sheds often have no heat, and that is where cardboard boxes soften, tools rust and stored camping gear picks up a mildew smell. Needles and moss blow in every time the door opens.

The fixes are simple and they stack. Everything moves out of cardboard into lidded plastic bins. Nothing sits directly on the slab: shelving starts a few centimetres up and the bottom shelf holds the heaviest, least damp-sensitive things. Shelving stands slightly off exterior walls so air moves behind it. Tools that rust get hung, not boxed. If mould or white mineral bloom is already showing on walls or the slab, our guide to mould in Vancouver garages explains what to clean, what to leave to a professional, and why. How the Job Runs

We start with a free on-site visit. On an acreage property we walk every building with you and agree what each one is for, then send a written plan with a fixed price. On the day, we pull everything out onto the driveway, sort it into keep, donate, recycle and dispose, clean the empty floor, then build back in: carts and freezer first, then daily gear, then seasonal and water gear, then the shop. Donation and disposal leave with us. A single garage is usually one day; a garage plus a detached shop is usually two.

Shelving, bins, rails and hoists are quoted separately at cost, and we can work with what you already own. If you want new storage hardware designed for the space, our garage storage solutions page walks through shelving, wall tracks and overhead racks for coastal garages.

Where We Work Around Anmore and Belcarra

We cover all of Anmore, including Crystal Creek, Countryside and the homes along Sunnyside and East Roads, and all of Belcarra around Bedwell Bay. Down the hill we work across Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, and across Metro Vancouver from Burnaby to New Westminster. Every city we serve is listed on our Metro Vancouver services page. GarageScape started in Alberta, where the garage storage we build in Calgary deals with frost and road salt, and our garage decluttering in Calgary is still where most of our Alberta work begins.

Anmore & Belcarra Garage Organization: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work in Anmore and Belcarra?

Yes. We cover all of Anmore, including Crystal Creek, Countryside and the homes along Sunnyside and East Roads, and all of Belcarra around Bedwell Bay, along with Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam below.

Where should garbage and organics carts be kept in Anmore?

Anmore's Solid Waste Management Bylaw No. 554-2016 says carts cannot go out before 5:30 a.m. on collection day and must be locked and stored by 10 p.m. The village recommends a secure place such as a garage or shed. We set up a marked cart station by the overhead door with room for the lids to open, a wash-down spot and a hook for the keys.

How do you keep a garage from attracting bears?

Keep anything that smells of food sealed or frozen. Pet food and bird seed go in gasketed bins inside the garage, food scraps go in the freezer until pickup, the barbecue is cleaned and stored covered, and carts are cleaned regularly and kept latched. Then keep the garage door closed.

Can you organize a detached shop and an RV garage as well as the main garage?

Yes. On acreage properties we plan all the buildings together so each one has a clear job: daily use and carts in the attached garage, tools and fuel in the shop, and the RV or boat with its own gear. Second buildings are quoted separately after the site visit.

What do you do with old paint and chemicals on a septic property?

We sort every liquid. What you still use goes into a closed, low cabinet away from the house door and freezer. Old, dried or unlabelled products leave with us for proper disposal rather than being rinsed into a sink that drains to the septic field.

How should boat and paddle gear be stored in a Belcarra garage?

With airflow. Life jackets and wet suits hang on open hooks so they dry, paddleboards and kayaks go on padded wall cradles or a ceiling hoist checked against the garage door, outboards sit on a floor stand, and bait gear gets its own rinse spot.

How much does garage organization cost in Anmore and Belcarra?

Organization starts at $549 for a single or tandem garage, $899 for a standard double, and $1,800 for a full transformation that bundles decluttering, a deep clean and the organization build. Detached shops and second garages are quoted per building. Shelving, bins and racks are quoted separately at cost.
